Zoom Lessons

How to get started with Zoom

For a successful online session, you need 3 things:

  1. A reliable high-speed internet connection. Connect to a Wi-Fi network instead of using your data plan when joining a call, as Zoom consumes a significant amount of data!

  2. A capable device (ideally with an external microphone).

  3. The Zoom Meetings application with the correct settings (see below).

To join your lesson:

  1. Click the invitation link or enter the Meeting ID provided.

  2. Input the password received in your invitation email.

  3. Enter your first and last name for the screen name.

  4. Click the "Join" button!

How to adjust your audio:

  1. Locate the audio options in the lower-left corner of your screen. Click the up arrow next to the mute button to open the menu.

  2. Ensure your microphone volume falls between 50% and 75%. Too low, and no one will hear you; too high, and your instrument may distort the microphone.

  3. Uncheck the box for "Automatically adjust the volume." This prevents the program from mistaking your instrument playing for shouting.

  4. Click "Advanced" in the bottom right corner.

  5. Enable "Original Sound." This option, especially with an external microphone, can work wonders!

  6. Disable "Suppress Persistent Background Noise."

  7. Disable "Suppress Intermittent Background Noise."

  8. Leave Echo Cancellation on Auto.

  9. Return to the main screen by clicking the "X."
